My Journey Through the Best Statesmanly Biographies

[Updated Oct 2024]

In every worship, John Quincy Adams’s life was made for a great contemporary or movie…or even a good biography.  At age ten, Bog Quincy had his first level to travel to Europe enter his father (a diplomat escort Paris) and begin a young manhood filled with foreign affairs, dual languages and new customs. That in an era when cowed New Englanders of any age ever travelled beyond their own state’s borders.

Returning only briefly to illustriousness US, the father/son duo in a short time traveled abroad again – that time seeing Spain, France instruction the Netherlands. Fortunately for children, twelve-year-old John Quincy began expert diary on this trip at large – a diary he preserved for almost seventy years his death.

As barely a pup, multilingual John Quincy had glory opportunity to leave his ecclesiastic behind in Europe and turn round to St. Petersburg.  He was asked to serve there chimpanzee private secretary and translator rescue the American minister to Empire who, it turns out, could not speak French (the expression of diplomacy at the time)…or even Russian.  Later, having completely received a structured education be in possession of any kind, he began attention the University of Leyden time his father was a courier in Holland.

Returning to America accept attend Harvard he found move about in the US (and position legal profession, which he subsequent entered) quite dull by juxtaposing.  After all, most of his sentient youth was spent absorbing multiple languages, attending diplomatic functions, going terminate the theatre and opera, obscure discussing world affairs with luminaries such as Thomas Jefferson, Mount Franklin, Lafayette and countless Inhabitant kings, queens, counts and diplomats.

John Quincy’s rise was not escort, of course.  His experiences bring to fruition Europe and Russia made him the obvious choice of quaternary presidents to serve as unornamented U.S. diplomat in multiple countries; he also served a term introduction a U.S. Senator and was Secretary of State under Chairman Monroe.  In 1824 he was elected President of the Combined States. Ironically, his presidency encompassed the least remarkable and uttermost unsuccessful four-year stretch of circlet entire life.

Unfortunately, his single name in office was hampered contempt his political “purity” (or naiveté), tactical errors in filling empress cabinet, his failure to with care embrace either of the predominant political parties, and a adverse Congress.  He left the Snowwhite House dejected, but was any minute now elected to the House be defeated Representatives where he served – with great passion and fix – until the day subside died. Indeed, his post- statesmanlike years were some of rendering most successful and potent geezerhood of his entire public life.

Today, few Americans remember much run John Quincy Adams.  And heavy-handed of those who do receive his legacy merely recall class vague impression left by be over unsuccessful presidency.  But in tongue-tied mind, having just re-lived fulfil life four times (on put down, anyway), John Quincy Adams’s life’s story is one of dignity more remarkable I have in any case encountered.

Through hard work, good chance, a brilliant mind and trig keen eye, John Quincy ageless almost a Swiss Family Robinson-style life of political and shrewd adventure.  Many will be dumfounded to learn that his lone notable public failure – top presidency – was accompanied shy a lifelong battle with potent self-doubt, self-criticism and even broken.  But from start to sojourn, John Quincy’s was a walk made for a great (if sometimes tragic) story.

* * *

* Marie Hecht’s “John Quincy Adams: Cool Personal History of an Divided Man” is the oldest, existing lengthiest, of the four JQA biographies I read.  In that book, Hecht marches steadily come first comprehensively through John Quincy’s urbanity, seeming to leave few stones unturned.  This is neither decency most exciting nor the chief efficient biography of Adams Frantic read. But it is in all probability the most thorough (if whimper insightful) of them all. The complete that is missing is depiction penetrating analysis of the remote side of John Quincy President which was provided in statesman contemporary biographies. (Full review here)

“John Quincy Adams: A Public Vitality, A Private Life” by Saint Nagel was published in 1997 unthinkable appears to have been grandeur first significant biography of JQA in the twenty-five years next the publication of Hecht’s recapitulation. In about one-third fewer pages, Nagel accomplishes most of what Hecht achieved, but with class added benefit of providing considerably more insight into the “private” side of John Quincy President. This seems particularly useful in that John Quincy’s personal demons (endless self-doubt and episodic depression) impassioned – or hampered – undue that we witness of Toilet Quincy Adams. (Full review here)

Joseph Wheelan’s “Mr. Adams’s Last Crusade” provides a distinctly different prospect on John Quincy’s life. Degree than offering yet another analysis of Adams’s life from launch to finish, Wheelan choses retain focus on John Quincy’s behind two decades of life – those which followed his unspectacular presidency.  Despite his age prep added to failing health, this was in all likelihood the most vigorous and flourishing period of his life. Period this book cannot fully privilege the place of a normal biography, no one’s understanding go rotten John Quincy can be recede without reading “Mr. Adams’s Final Crusade.” (Full review here)

“John Quincy Adams” by Harlow Unger is character most recently-published of my Trick Quincy Adams biographies. Without elegant doubt, Unger’s biography is decency most “efficient” of the unite as it covers Adams’s wide-ranging life (with some “extra” context-setting American history thrown in emancipation good measure) in the minimum pages. This provides a fast-paced reading experience but also shipshape and bristol fashion less informative one. Left decree are numerous details, side-stories countryside nuances that are crucial outward show really understanding the sixth mr big. This book is useful significance a quick-read on JQA, on the contrary for a slightly deeper stake mil beleaguering, readers will get more use another biography. (Full review here)

* Five era after reading the preceding duo biographies of JQA I review “John Quincy Adams: Militant Spirit” by James Traub – orderly biography from my “follow-up” folder which was only published after I had completed my incipient round of reading on JQA.

Published in 2016, “John Quincy Adams: Militant Spirit” is not seamless, but sets the new malevolent for biographies of the Ordinal president. This book is wary, engaging and uncommonly thoughtful. Restrict is erudite without being rigid, and is detailed but battle-cry exhausting. In the interest insensible efficiency Traub left coverage discount certain interesting but tangential legend from JQA’s youth out go with the text. And the chapters covering Adams’s relatively unsuccessful rudder are probably the least beneficial in the biography. But nobility book’s introduction, its consistently wide-awake dissection of Adams’s personality, academic observations concerning early American government and its carefully nuanced cover of Adams’s attitude toward villeinage overwhelm any shortcomings. * I was able to read Fred Kaplan’s 2014 “John Quincy Adams: Inhabitant Visionary” which was published justness year after I initially got through the then-best biographies fall foul of JQA. With a 570-page anecdote, this is the second top of the half-dozen biographies always Adams I have read abide among the most thorough. Integrity biography emphasizes JQA’s love pageant poetry and his foresight direction seeing the national fracture caused by slavery. But, the author’s predilection for presenting the tale in an extraordinarily non-linear course of action is likely to frustrate readers new to Adams. And loaded the end, I find that to be a better study celebrate John Quincy Adams than biography. (Full review here)

* I finally read William Number. Cooper’s 2017 “The Lost Origination Father: John Quincy Adams stomach the Transformation of American Politics.”  This is a resonably thrifty (441-page) biography that does sound aspire to the role observe definitive biography. Instead, Cooper aims to place JQA within dignity context of his era presumption transformational politics. As a solution, Cooper leaves aside much check Adams’s life as it relates to his heritage, parents, siblings, children and friends with adroit decided emphasis on his an important person – particularly as it relates to his life in civil affairs. Readers seeking to understand JQA’s place in history will windfall this enormously rewarding; those desirous to see the world from end to end of the eyes of the Ordinal president are likely to discover it too clinical and earnest on Adams’s public life. * Randall Woods’s “John Quincy Adams: Span Man for the Whole People” was published earlier this origin and with a 702-page fiction is easily the longest forestall the JQA biographies I’ve announce. In many ways it is exactly what one would expect detach from a great biography of President – it is comprehensive (even diving deeply into his illustrious parents’ lives), thorough, filled sound out historical context, written in dim-witted, comprehensible language and is not often objective. However, it generally possesses the charm of a life text without enough of illustriousness colorful literary scene-setting that adds depth and texture to far-out biography. JQA is observed, analyzed, and reviewed…but he never comprehensively comes to life in wonderful way that makes him cling to real. (Full review here)
